Hood Industries operates a high-capacity Southern Yellow Pine sawmill that produces large volumes of dry planermill dust and sawdust as a byproduct of lumber processing. These fine particles needed to be safely captured, stored, and conveyed over a long distance — while also being reused as a sustainable energy source.
The goal was clear: create a high-performance system that could continuously move dry SYP sawdust from storage silos to the kiln area — about 600–700 feet away — where it could be used as fuel for the mill’s drying kilns.

The Solution: A Complete Metering Bin and Pneumatic Conveying System
Boulware Equipment designed, built, and supplied a fully integrated Metering Bin and Pneumatic Conveying System for Hood Industries. This advanced system was engineered to feed hammermilled Southern Yellow Pine sawdust from storage silos directly to four dry kilns, ensuring a steady and reliable flow of material 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Here’s how it works:

Dust elimination and suction systems collect fine SYP sawdust and transport it via pneumatic conveyance.

The material is stored in large silos equipped with level sensors and air filtration for safe dust storage.

From there, the Boulware metering bin carefully regulates the flow of sawdust into the vacuum-powered conveying system, which carries it through a network of pipes to the dry kilns.

The sawdust is then used as a fuel source, generating heat and steam to dry the lumber — effectively turning waste into renewable energy.
This system allows Hood Industries to repurpose its dry planermill waste exhaust and storage material, eliminating costly disposal processes while powering its own production in an environmentally responsible way.
